Tobias Welz is research fellow at the Research Center for Digital Sustainability at the Institute of Information Systems at University of Bern. His work focuses on sustainable procurement, in particular by public bodies, at federal, cantonal and municipal level.
From 2015 to 2019 he was head of the Division on environmental management for the Archdiocese of Cologne, where he built up the topics of climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation, covered by an eco-management system (EMAS), which he has managed for several years. Tobias Welz has also worked on the development of procurement guidelines and call for tenders. At the end of his studies on mechanical engineering and business management Tobias Welz worked from 2007 - 2009 at Empa in St. Gallen in the field of life cycle assessment of products and processes. From 2012-2014, he continued to work in an Empa spin-off on methodologies that bring together natural and social sciences to build transdisciplinary approaches to overcome obstacles towards a more sustainable development in society.
